    Sharing an Honor

    Sharing an Honor-

Reviewing articles in the journal Pediatrics

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is our country’s definitive society of pediatricians.  A vast majority of pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists are members of the AAP, and it sets policies for pediatric practice here and around the world.

The flagship medical journal of the AAP is Pediatrics, which is widely regarded as the world’s leading publication of studies regarding the health and well-being of infants, children, and adolescents.

And so it is a real treat to share an honor I have been enjoying this summer.  Pediatrics has invited me to review articles submitted for publication.  The peer review process requires studies seeking publication to have peers to read the papers and comment on whether the topic, the methods, the results, and conclusions are of interest, done with clear logic, and prove the points they claim to prove.  Each medical journal selects its peers to review their articles with care, since it is the peer review that will determine the level of quality of that journal.   This summer Pediatrics asked me to review one manuscript, and just a few weeks later has asked me to review another.

I am deeply honored to have been asked to join in this work for several reasons.  Of course, being asked by a journal of the level of Pediatrics is honor enough.  But as anyone who knows me will appreciate, I am a big fan of good science.  It is only by thinking carefully about observations we make that humanity has made any progress towards a better world.  Being able in some very small way, to help this scientific process continue and advance is one of the great opportunities of being a doctor, one that I am so happy to share with you.
    Be well,
    Dr. Arthur Lavin
